The Synchro club is part of the main swimming club although we now have some swimmers who only train with the synchro club.  There are two main squads, the senior group have been training for a number of years and have competed at national level, the younger group have been going for about a year and have already competed in three big competitions – winning their section in the most recent competition at county level. The Senior squad also won their section of the county competition, and two of the girls achieved gold and silver in the figures. There are also some newer members who have not yet performed routines, although some have competed as individuals in figures competitions.SynchroPhoto2

In 2007 the senior squad competed in 5 competitions including the National Synchronized Swimming competition in Gloucester in December, where they were among the top ten teams in the UK at their level. This also gave the club a wonderful opportunity to watch the GB duet, currently rated No 5 in the world, and the Spanish duet who are the No 2. And it was very easy to see why!

The Synchro Club train twice a week on Thursdays  6.00-7.00pm and Sundays 2.00-3.30pm. They are coached by Sam Finch, Lisa Burdett, Jenny Kennedy and Steve Surridge.

SynchroPhoto3Synchronized Swimming is actually very physically demanding and helps with stamina training for general swimming. All the senior squad and some of the junior squad are capable of swimming a length underwater. This branch of the sport is great fun; it involves dancing to music whilst in water, both upside down and the right way up. It is probably the only Olympic Sport where make up is required, and the costumes the squads get to wear are very pretty. Swimmers need the flexibility of a gymnast – many members are able to perform the splits, and the stamina of long distance swimmers as a routine can last up to 5 minutes, and our girls have been under the water for nearly 20 seconds at a time.
